In material science, research is proceeding in tandem with new technologies and the sophistication of experimental methods. Analytical techniques are also utilized in archaeology and cultural heritage studies. However, in such fields, the evolution of specific technologies tailored to individual research needs and comprehensive quantum beam analysis are limited. Therefore, the strategic linkage between material science, which has cutting-edge technologies, and the humanities is expected to open up new areas of knowledge.
IMR and seven other academic institutions initiated the “Innovative Knowledge Hub for Humanities and Materials Science (IKH)” project in FY2023. This project aims to establish an interdisciplinary field that fuses material science and humanities. To achieve this goal, IMR will serve as a hub and build a system to promote collaboration with diverse research institutions and communities distinct from conventional ones. We are already proceeding with neutron beam analysis on ancient ceramics, dinosaur bones, etc. Please look forward to this project.
